Last weekend I attended the first of six CSUSM seminars entitled The Leading Edge. This particular one was focused on marketing; where its come, and where it's going.
I have to say, it's one of the first educational discussions I've attended in a long time where I actually learned a few things. And that's the idea, right?
Four different people spoke on four different topics, which was an important part of the seminar's success in my opinion. When you are already in the industry of marketing, you don't always need an overview. You need something in depth on a specific subject that you might not be an expert in.
However, I really enjoyed Jon Carder's talk on game mechanics. Even though he didn't go into great detail, it was a new enough subject to keep me engaged and interested. And I actually came up with a pretty brilliant plan of my own on how to use game mechanics with my small business clients.
One thing I would have enjoyed more was a slightly different angle on the lecture on analytics. Although the speaker was very knowledgeable on how to analyze your website statistics, I was hoping for more ways to analyze the success of specific marketing tactics. There are a lot of new methods coming out to help track the success of social media, specific campaigns, and advertising. Those are some waters I think most people could use more help navigating with all the new developments in technology.
At the end of the day, for a free seminar, I had a great time! The subjects were diverse and engaging, and I think everyone was able to take something away from it. I'm not sure what the next five Leading Edge topics will be, but I hope to see you there.
